EV Charger Installation

EV home charger installations in the Cowichan Valley, Ladysmith to Duncan, BC and beyond, by qualified licensed electricians, experienced in safely installing Level 2 Electric Vehicle Chargers for your home or business.
Our EV charging experts can assess your needs and the available electrical service to your electrical panel, to determine if you have the required capacity for a level 2 charger or whether you will need to upgrade your service. Most homes that have 200 Amp service don't require an upgrade, depending on your use and loads.
Once we know you have the capacity and want to proceed with the Electrical vehicle charger installation, we will go ahead and pull a permit.
Level 2 charger installation typically costs between $750 and $1,600 depending on your setup, level 2 EV chargers are eligible for provincial rebates up to $350 through BC Hydro. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Installation Steps

    • Check Capacity: Our electrician can assess your electrical service panel as to suitability. Older homes, or homes with only 100-amp service, may require panel upgrades or a dynamic power-sharing device to safely support an EV charger without overloading the system.
    • Our Licensed Electrical Contractor will obtain an electrical installation permit, hiring a licensed electrical contractor guarantees the work is up to code and ensures your home insurance remains valid. [1]
    • Equipment Selection: We recommend you select a Rebate-Eligible Charger, recognized by BC Hydro to qualify for rebates. [1, 2
    • Installation & Inspection: Our electrician will install the charger (usually in the garage or a driveway), run the wiring, and install the breaker. An inspector will subsequently verify the work. [1, 2]

Rebates and Incentives in BC
    • Single-Family Homes: The CleanBC Go Electric program covers up to 50% of the purchase and installation costs, to a maximum of $350. You can apply for this directly through BC Hydro or your utility provider. [1]

Electric Vehicle Charging Safety

  • EV charging is safe, when using certified equipment installed by a licensed electrical contractor.
  • Chargers should carry an official safety certification from one of the following organizations: CSA, cUL, or ETL
  • Consult Technical Safety BC for permit requirements and licensed contractor verification.
  • Never plug in using an extension cord or multiplug adaptor
  • Electric vehicle chargers MUST be on their own dedicated circuit, rated to handle the continuous load.

Charging Habits

  • Prior to plugging in, always inspect the connector plug, cable, and vehicle port, for cracks, debris or damage.
  • Protect the cables from damage by not driving over them and preferably using a cable management system to store them safely out of the way when not in use.
  • Stop using if faulty: Unusual clicking, smells or high heat from the charger, cable or vehicle port may indicate a problem. Stop using right away and call your electrician, or fire department if smoke or fire is detected.

Fire Safety

  • Maintain a clear space around the vehicle and charging equipment. Keep combustible or flammable materials clear
  • Purchase a certified charger with "auto-cutoff" to stop the charging, once the battery is full.
  • If you see white smoke, gas or flames, leave immediately, do not attempt to fight the fire. The fumes and gases produced, are highly toxic and explosive.
Call the Fire Department right away.
